What Casein Protein is
Casein is one of the two main proteins in cow's milk (the other is whey), and it is sold as a protein powder, drink, or bar. Like other complete animal proteins, it supplies all of the essential amino acids the body needs but cannot make on its own. What the evidence shows
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) notes that getting adequate protein supplies the essential amino acids needed to make muscle proteins and reduces the breakdown of proteins in muscle, and that protein "improves your body's response to athletic training and helps shorten the time you need to recover after exercise." Importantly, NIH also stresses that an athlete can probably get enough protein from food, that supplements help only "if needed" to reach recommended intakes, and that there is no benefit to consuming more than the recommended amount. The ODS fact sheets address protein broadly (noting most powders use whey) and do not single out casein as superior; the consumer fact sheet does not mention casein at all, and the health-professional fact sheet mentions it only to note that whey has more leucine than casein or soy. Claims that the slow digestion of casein specifically improves muscle or recovery outcomes are not established by these sources.
