Can you drink alcohol on Wellbutrin?
The FDA label for Wellbutrin says alcohol should be minimized or avoided, so it's best to skip drinking or keep it very limited while on it — and check with your doctor.
Why
Two mechanisms drive the caution. First, bupropion lowers the seizure threshold, and the Wellbutrin label lists "excessive use of alcohol" and especially abrupt discontinuation of heavy alcohol use among the conditions that raise seizure risk during treatment — a real reason bupropion isn't given to people who drink heavily and might suddenly stop. Second, the label reports postmarketing cases of "reduced alcohol tolerance" and neuropsychiatric events in people drinking during treatment, meaning a normal amount of alcohol can hit you harder than expected. MedlinePlus adds that alcohol can make bupropion's side effects worse and says to talk to your doctor about safe use. That's why the label's own wording is that alcohol "should be minimized or avoided."
What to watch for
Heavy or binge drinking, and abruptly stopping after drinking heavily, carry the highest seizure risk — avoid both entirely on bupropion. If you drink at all, keep it minimal and notice whether one drink affects you more than usual (worse coordination, mood changes, feeling unwell). Warning signs that need urgent care: any seizure, confusion, or fainting. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before drinking if you take other seizure-threshold-lowering meds, have a seizure or eating-disorder history, drink regularly, or are pregnant. Do not stop a regular drinking habit suddenly without medical guidance while on this drug.
