Can you drink coffee while taking Adderall?

Use caution

A moderate amount of coffee is usually tolerated with Adderall, but because both are stimulants their effects stack, so it is worth keeping caffeine low and watching how you feel.

Why

Adderall (amphetamine/dextroamphetamine) and caffeine are both stimulants, so their effects add together rather than clash. MedlinePlus lists nervousness and headache among Adderall's common effects and carries serious cardiovascular warnings (chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting), and it notes the drug should not be taken in the late afternoon or evening because it can make it hard to fall or stay asleep. MedlinePlus separately says caffeine raises blood pressure, causes a fast heart rate, restlessness and shakiness, and insomnia — and it specifically advises checking with a healthcare provider if you take stimulant medicines. Layering coffee on top of Adderall pushes the same dials (heart rate, blood pressure, jitteriness, poor sleep) further in the same direction.

What to watch for

In moderation this combination is usually not dangerous, but keep an eye on a racing or pounding heart, feeling wired or shaky, anxiety, and trouble sleeping — cut back on coffee if you notice them, and avoid caffeine later in the day since Adderall already disrupts sleep. Be cautious with energy drinks and large cold-brews, which carry much more caffeine than a single cup. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before combining if you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, an anxiety disorder, are pregnant, or take other medications.
