These are not two versions of the same drug. Vyvanse is a Schedule II stimulant; Strattera is not a controlled substance at all. Their FDA labels carry different boxed warnings, and the choice belongs to a prescriber.

The key difference

One difference that matters is drug class. Vyvanse's label calls lisdexamfetamine a prodrug of amphetamine and a Schedule II controlled substance. Strattera's label states that it is not a controlled substance, and describes atomoxetine as a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor.

That drives different boxed warnings. Vyvanse's is ABUSE, MISUSE, AND ADDICTION: high potential for abuse and misuse that can lead to a substance use disorder, and misuse or abuse of CNS stimulants can result in overdose and death. Strattera's is SUICIDAL IDEATION IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS — the label tells prescribers to weigh that risk against clinical need and monitor closely for suicidal thinking, clinical worsening, or unusual changes in behavior.

Both labels also carry cardiovascular warnings: serious cardiac events, avoid in known serious cardiac disease, monitor blood pressure and heart rate. Both are contraindicated with MAO inhibitors, or within 14 days of stopping one.

What favours Strattera (atomoxetine)

Strattera is the labelled option when a stimulant is being avoided — it is not a controlled substance, and its label reports no evidence of a discontinuation or withdrawal syndrome. Its approved indication is ADHD only. Its label warns of severe liver injury: discontinue and do not restart in a patient with jaundice or laboratory evidence of liver injury. It is also contraindicated in narrow-angle glaucoma and in pheochromocytoma or a history of it — contraindications Vyvanse's label does not carry. Dosing shape: taken daily by mouth.

What favours Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine)

Vyvanse is approved for ADHD in adults and children 6 and older, and separately for moderate-to-severe binge eating disorder in adults — an indication Strattera does not have. Its label is explicit that it is not indicated for weight loss. Its own labelled cautions include long-term suppression of growth in children (monitor height and weight), peripheral vasculopathy including Raynaud's phenomenon, tics and worsening of Tourette's, and serotonin syndrome when taken with serotonergic drugs such as SSRIs, SNRIs, or triptans. Dosing shape: once every morning.

Bottom line

Most "X vs Y" ADHD pages want you to believe one drug wins. Here the labels genuinely differ — a Schedule II amphetamine prodrug against a non-controlled norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, with different boxed warnings and one extra approved indication — so a prescriber has to weigh your abuse-risk history, your cardiac history, your liver, whether you already take a serotonergic drug or an MAO inhibitor, and what you are actually being treated for. Neither is "the safe one."

Do not stop or switch either one on your own, and do not take either within 14 days of an MAO inhibitor.

We do not sell these drugs and we do not sell coupons. We rate them on their FDA recall record, which is why we can tell you the choice is your prescriber's and leave it there.

This page is not a substitute for the FDA label. Read the label your pharmacy hands you, and take questions to the person writing the prescription.

This is not a summary of either drug’s FDA label, and it is not complete. Both labels carry warnings, contraindications and interactions that are not on this page. Read the label for the drug you are actually taking — we link both above — and take the decision to your prescriber.

Possible drug interaction. STRATTERA and VYVANSE are different prescription medicines. Combining or switching between them can cause interactions — talk to a pharmacist or prescriber before making changes. This page is not medical advice.
